Student Calls for Resignation at Manchester University After Alleged Racial Profiling
Students at Manchester University are up in arms after a Black student, Zac Adan, reported being racially profiled by security officers. The incident has reignited calls for the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Nancy Rothwell.
The 19-year-old freshman claims security officers stopped him on Friday night, accusing him of appearing like a "drug dealer" and demanding ID. This sparked outrage, with dozens protesting at the university's Fallowfield campus.
The Manchester University, a member of the prestigious Russell Group, launched an investigation and suspended the involved security officers. However, this follows a series of controversies, including the installation of £11,000 metal fencing (torn down by students) and lockdown measures causing student anger.
Nahella Ashraf of Manchester Stand Up to Racism believes Adan was targeted solely due to his race. She highlighted similar reports from other students and demanded accountability. "This university views Black people as outsiders," she stated, calling for Rothwell's resignation.
The Manchester University, contacted for comment, expressed concern and confirmed an investigation and security officer suspension. Additionally, they pledged a two-week rent reduction for students following protests on accommodation issues.
Student frustrations stemmed from a lockdown requiring remote learning while still paying full rent. This led to a week-long occupation of Owens Park tower, demanding a 40% rent reduction. The incident with Adan adds fuel to the fire of student discontent regarding the university's handling of the pandemic and student support.
